FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: STOP THE DEATHS:
Two More People Dead in Downtown East End: Community to Gather in Protest
WHEN: Wednesday August 20, 2008 1 pm
WHERE: Outside the Coroner's Office 15 Grosvenor Street (West of Yonge, North of College)
WE REMEMBER: Frank Julian, Carolyn Connolly, Dennis Bowen, Robert Maurice, Biniyam Selleshi Frank Julian and Carolyn Connolly
were both found dead in Toronto's East End in recent weeks.
The Ontario Coalition Against Poverty condemns the fact that two more people in our community have died this month.
We refuse to stand by as people are dying on the street, in shelters, or alone in their apartments in the far corners of Toronto,
with only a few dollars remaining after rent is paid, shipped out of their neighbourhoods by the City of Toronto's "Streets
to Homes" program.
Not another person should die because the City of Toronto has abandoned them to struggle and suffer in poverty.
OCAP calls on the City to stop telling the public that poverty issues are being adequately addressed. It is appalling that
Mayor Miller and city officials remain silent on the deaths in our community.
Four people have died this summer alone, in serious conditions of poverty. The City must take action to address these deaths,
and the daily hell that poor people are experiencing.
These are four preventable deaths, four deaths too many. We do not want to bury another person from our neighbourhood.
